Barcelona megastar Lionel Messi has opened up on the apparent rivalry with Real Madrid counterpart Cristiano Ronaldo by claiming that it doesn’t exist because it was entirely made up by the media, the Daily Mirror reports.
The duo are undoubtedly the two greatest players in the world right now, having dominated the World Player of the Year awards since 2008 and have continuously broken all manner of goalscoring records along the way.
And Messi has claimed that there is no rivalry or hard feelings between the two.
“There is no rivalry,” Messi told Shortlist.
“It’s something the media invented. We both want to do well for our clubs, it is not Messi vs Ronaldo, it never has been.”
The little Argentine also took time out to lavish praise on Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney.
Asked which English players he believed would thrive in the Spanish top flight, the 27-year-old pointed out Rooney as the standout star.
“If you look at the technical ability of a player like Wayne Rooney, he is as good as any player in Europe,” Messi added.
“Rooney has exceptional quality. Not just great technical ability, but also works very hard for his team. I’m sure Manchester United will never want to let him leave, though.”
Messi ended the season with a triple trophy haul under his belt and a stunning 58 goals in 57 appearances across all competitions.
