Former Liverpool hero John Aldridge believes that the Reds should not be too concerned should they lose wantaway winger Raheem Sterling this summer, as the choice of who replaces him is an obvious one, and wouldn’t even command a transfer fee.
The Metro report that Sterling is hoping to leave Anfield this summer, having previously rejected the offer to extend his contract beyond the final two years left on his current deal.
The situation has left the ball in the Merseyside club’s court, as they don’t have to sell this summer. Nevertheless, the Metro suggest that Brendan Rodgers would be willing to let him go in this window should a side meet their £50m asking price. And while Manchester City have had two bids rejected, it does appear that they remain favourites for his signature.
Although Sterling clearly has plenty of talent, and proved at times to be one of the real bright points in a difficult season for his club, Aldridge does not think that the Reds need to worry, as in Jordon Ibe they have a player that could be much better than Sterling.
“He’s got as much, if not more potential, than Raheem had at that age. He’s a big strong lad, very direct and a better finisher than Raheem,” he explained.
“It’s a bonus for Liverpool that they already have got one on the shelf,” he added.
Ibe began to establish himself as a growing part of Rodgers’ plans in the latter half of last season, having enjoyed a promising loan spell with Derby County.
And unlike Sterling, the 19-year-old has committed his future to Liverpool, with The Guardian reporting that he signed a new five-year deal in May. However, if his first few performances for the club are anything to go by, Reds fans will be hoping he is around for a lot longer.
