Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes that James Milner could be the Reds’ next captain, should he complete his move to Anfield.

The Daily Mirror report that the England international could move to Merseyside once his contract expires at current club Manchester City, and could have extra responsibility arrive at his door straight away, according to the pundit.
“The news of the likely arrival of James Milner at Liverpool throws up a few questions, I think it’s a very good signing a free transfer who can play in a few positions and got great experience,” Carragher said.
With Steven Gerrard leaving the club in the summer, the armband is up for grabs with his successor yet to be named. And while Jordan Henderson has done the job when the midfielder has been missing this season, Carragher suggested that if he was Brendan Rodgers’ first choice, he would have already been appointed to the role.
“The fact that Brendan Rodgers wouldn’t confirm Jordan Henderson as this season’s captain even though he was captain in Gerrard’s absence last season makes me think him and Milner could be competing for the armband,” he added.
With the amount of inexperienced, young players in the squad, Rodgers may looking to a senior member of the side – even if they come from outside – to steer the team forward after a disappointing campaign that saw them finish well outside the Premier League’s top four.
Milner meanwhile, has two league title medals to his name, and has played alongside some of the biggest names in the country, so has the necessary experience to help the side get back to where they feel they belong.
