Liverpool have moved ahead of Aston Villa and Arsenal and into pole position in the race to land Charlton Athletic defender Joe Gomez.
According to The Sun, the Reds are looking to pay around £3.5m for the 18-year-old, who can play as either a right-back or in the centre.
He has burst onto the scene this year, making 21 appearances for the Addicks, as they finished just inside the top half of the Championship. Gomez has also played at various youth levels for England.
The Sun suggest that Brendan Rodgers wants the youngster to come in this summer to help bolster his defensive ranks.
While he is arguably not ready for first team football at a top flight side just yet, the interested trio have realised that he possesses plenty of potential, and he could definitely be one for the future.
And Liverpool are in need of adding options. The Sun report that exiled defender Sebastian Coates is close to agreeing a £4m move to Sunderland. The Uruguayan spent last year on loan with the Black Cats, and made a decent impression at the Stadium of Light, especially in the latter stages of the campaign.
Rodgers has also lost Glen Johnson, and will surely have to start thinking about playing Emre Can – who played much of last year in either a back three or four – in his natural position of midfield.
