Liverpool legend Ray Houghton has said that he believes the club’s main target during the current transfer window will be Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke, the Daily Express reports.
The Belgian international has been linked with a move to Anfield recently, but talks between the two have stalled, according to the London Evening Standard.
They initially refused to meet the player’s £32.5m release clause, but after thinking about it, their interest has apparently been piqued once again.
And Houghton, who starred for both club’s during the 1980s and 90s, believes that the Reds haven’t been perturbed by the striker’s massive fee and will therefore make him their top priority this summer.
“I heard that Benteke was one of their major priorities in the summer, that he was the one that they were looking for,” he said.
“Benteke is a huge player. I think if he went to Liverpool he would fit into the style. He’s something they haven’t got, he’s big, he’s physical.
“He can upset defenders, he’s got genuine pace and when you get him in the right frame of mind he can score goals.”
Benteke joined Villa in the summer of 2012, and went on to score an impressive 49 goals in 99 appearances across all competitions, despite missing a significant chunk of time with a serious ankle injury.
