Liverpool flop Mario Balotelli could be heading back to Serie A, just one year after his highly-publicised move to Merseyside.
According to the Daily Mirror, Sampdoria – who took Samuel Eto’o off Everton’s hands in January – seems the most likely destination for the controversial striker. And the Mirror suggest that the 24-year-old would be open to the possibility of a return to his home country.
The speculation seems to confirm that both the player and his club are ready to throw in the towel and admit that the gamble has not paid off for the former Manchester City man since his £16m move.
Balotelli has only returned one goal in the top flight this season, leading Brendan Rodgers to include youngster Jerome Sinclair on the bench for the potentially pivotal Premier League clash with Chelsea at the back end of the campaign, while the ex-AC Milan forward was left out entirely.
One potential stumbling block to any deal is the Italian’s wages, the Mirror report. Sampdoria are hopeful of splitting his wages between the two clubs during the duration of his loan.
