Meeting at The Savoy Hotel in London, Woodward and Karim Djaziri held a conversation about the possibility of the Red Devils making a £40m offer for the France international, though the striker is currently on holiday in New York, and didn’t attend.
United are in the market for a new striker this summer after Wayne Rooney managed to hit just 14 goal – making him the club’s lowest top scorer since Frank Stapleton in 1982.
With Robin van Persie’s future in doubt, and Radamel Falcao being sent back to Monaco, the Red Devils have just Rooney and youngster James Wilson to call upon.
Former United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was an admirer of Benzema’s since he made his breakthrough at Lyon, but he left for Real Madrid in a £35m deal a year later, while Michael Owen headed to Old Trafford instead.
Woodward is hoping to capitalise on the uncertainty that Rafa Benitez’s arrival has caused at the Bernabeu by making a concrete move for the 27-year-old.
Manager Louis van Gaal flew to Portugal for an end of season break last week, handing Woodward a list of names to sign.
