Manchester United are set to secure the future of centre-back Phil Jones by offering him a new four-year contract worth £80,000 a week, according to The Times.
The report claims that the 23-year-old will seal the deal later this week, and will join fellow defender Chris Smalling in committing his future to the club.
Louis van Gaal is placing his defence as one of his top priorities this summer. As well as locking down the futures of his current defensive units, he is also keen to add numbers and is said to be closing in on a move for Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos.
United are also still being heavily linked with the likes of Monaco’s Fabinho, Valencia’s Nicolas Otamendi and Borussia Dortmund stalwart, Mats Hummels.
Jones has just a year remaining on his current deal, but this new deal will tie him down for the long term.
