Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has insisted that he will not try to influence the future of Kevin De Bruyne, but hopes that his international teammate will decide to move to the Etihad Stadium this summer.
According to the Daily Mirror, the 29-year-old appeared to confirm that his club were interested in the Wolfsburg playmaker, and admitted he would be delighted to see the former Chelsea man join him in Manchester.
“There’s no secret. When you’re competing with the best, you can’t afford to take the eighth or the ninth best player in their position. Otherwise it reflects on your ambition,” he explained.
“If he comes to City, I would be one of the happiest guys in the team. But it’s not my call and it’s his decision to make,” Kompany added.
De Bruyne has enjoyed an incredible season in the Bundesliga, and has rebuilt his reputation after being placed on the Stamford Bridge scrapheap. Understandably, Manuel Pellegrini has earmarked the 23-year-old as one of his main transfer targets this summer, the Mirror report.
As well as the undeniable quality he would bring, the Belgian would bring some much-needed youth in one of the Premier League’s oldest squads. Having not made drastic changes in the last few years – having won two Premier League titles in the last four seasons – last season suggested that the current side had reached the end of their cycle, and if they wish to contend at the top level next year, they arguably need to bring in more players like De Bruyne, who have plenty of years ahead of them.
However, Kompany has refuted the suggestion that City are a side on the decline, and believes that they will be challenging for the title again next year.
“Chelsea were very dominant last year. They were the best team so they deserved to win it. In that sense, the standard they have set is what will be required next season,” the skipper insisted.
“We have all the tools to be that team. When you finish second, there are still a lot of teams behind you, which people forget sometimes,” he said.
