It’s been four long years since Barcelona were last able to bring the Champions League back to the Nou Camp, but they’ve nabbed the title from current holders and arch-rivals Real Madrid with a hard fought victory over Italian giants Juventus in Berlin.
Favourites from the start, Barca took control early on, but were made to fight for the right to come out on top in an exciting second half. But don’t take our word for it, see for yourself below.
It took only three minutes for Barca to get off the mark, when Jordi Alba and Iniesta linked up on the edge of the box to draw Juve into them before releasing the onrushing Ivan Rakitic to slot cooly past a helpless Gianluigi Buffon.
Buffon came to Juve’s rescue just minutes later, though, as he got his hand to Dani Alves’ shot to keep the score down. This was starting to turn ugly for Juve, who must have feared they were to be on the end of a drubbing.
As the first half wore on, Juventus managed to consolidate themselves and steady the ship. But Barca striker Luis Suarez came within a whisker of doubling their lead.
After half time and Juve were looking to get back into the game. A great back heel from Claudio Marchisio put Lichsteiner through on goal, his cut back found Carlos Tevez, whose shot was blocked by Ter Stegen in the Barca goal, only for the reboud to land at the feel of former Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata. He won’t score an easier, or sweeter, goal than that.
However, Barca’s lead was restored just ten minutes later as a counter attack led by Lionel Messi saw the Argentine test Gigi Buffon from long range. He couldn’t keep hold of it and the rebound fell to Luis Suarez, who couldn’t miss from close range.
Controversy ensued just moments later, when Neymar’s headed goal was chalked off for offside. Cue scenes of handbags and a lot of gesticulating. The ball clearly hit his hand, but was it deliberate?
From one Spanish legend to another. Anders Iniesta hands over the captain’s armband over to Xavi for the final ten minutes as the 36-year-old makes his final appearance for the club.
Gerard Pique had the chance to kill the game off in the final moments, but the big defender showed exactly why he isn’t a striker with this wild strike.
Luis Suarez took a nasty knock to the knew, but was able to resume his position at the heart of the Barca attack.
And it’s all over. Right at the death, Neymar breaks away to finish off a move with a little help from Pedro.
