The president of newly promoted Turkish side Antalyaspor, Gultekin Gencer, is certainly setting out his ambitions early by claiming that he wants to sign Barcelona star Lionel Messi.
The club have just signed a pair of Messi’s former Barca teammates – two guys you may have heard of called Ronaldinho and Samuel Eto’o.
The former Ballon d’Or shortlist regulars were crucial to Barcelona’s success between 2003 and 2009, helping the club dominate domestic and European affairs by winning three La Liga titles and two Champions League trophies.
And Gencer is keen to outline the future plans for his side by planning an audacious deal to bring Messi to the club, too.
Speaking to Turkish television station, Lig TV, he said: “I hope the next president after me will be able to bring Messi to Antalyaspor in five years’ time.”
In five years time Messi will be 33, and though it’s unlikely that he’ll still have as much to offer Barcelona as he does now, he probably still won’t be tempted to make the move to the Bosphorus.
Then again, in five years time Antalyaspor may be Champions League winners.
Football’s a funny old game, so they say…
