Arsenal’s hopes of landing Barcelona youngster Sergi Samper have been greatly boosted, after reports in the Metro suggested that the midfielder wishes to leave the Nou Camp this summer.
The 20-year-old has become a regular member of the Catalan giants’ second team that are set to begin the upcoming campaign in the third tier of the Spanish game, having been relegated last season. He is yet to make an appearance for Luis Enrique’s side in the top flight, but he did make an appearance during a Champions League group game during the last campaign.
That inability to break into the side appears to be his motivation for wanting to leave the club (via Metro), and he may be open to either a loan move, or a permanent switch.
While Barcelona may not be keen to lose one of the most talented youngsters in their ranks, the decision may well be taken out of their hands.
The Daily Express reported earlier in the week that the Gunners were considering whether to trigger his £8.4m release clause, and their decision could now be swayed knowing that the Spaniard would be very open to a move.
Samper would be able to provide Francis Coquelin with the kind of defensive cover that Arsene Wenger’s squad is currently lacking. The Frenchman was a revelation last season, proving that they needed that steel to complement their flair. However, if he collected an injury, Wenger would not have been able to fill that void with a similar player.
The prospect of having that cover for as little as £8.4m is surely enough motivation for Wenger to make a move happen.
