Arsenal are reportedly set to make Real Madrid an offer they may struggle to refuse, after the Metro suggested that they were willing to bid £40.5m for Karim Benzema.
The Metro report that the Gunners had already had a bid of £30.3m turned down, and followed it up with an offer of £35.3m. However, they have decided to increase the bid once again, as Arsene Wenger desperately tries to land the ruthless forward.
Should this latest offer see the Frenchman move to the Emirates, it would probably allow the 27-year-old to link up with his new teammates before the new Premier League season begins. However, it seems unlikely that he will be available for this Sunday’s Community Shield clash with Chelsea.
Real Madrid may try to use Arsene Wenger’s desire to get a deal across the line to maximise the money they receive for the former Lyon forward. With over a month until the transfer window closes, there is plenty of time for the Gunners to make several more bids if they are so keen to sign Benzema.
But, it is unlikely – given his age – that Los Blancos will receive bids of over £40m should they decide to hold onto him beyond this window. He possibly has only a few more years left at his brutal best.
Arsenal fans will be hoping however, that he enjoys the peak years of his career in north London.
