Arsenal are hoping to sneak in ahead of Premier League rivals Liverpool, as they reportedly tussle in the battle for the signature of Marco Reus.
According to the Metro, Arsene Wenger is willing to utilise his £200m transfer kitty ahead of the new season, and wants to make the Borussia Dortmund star one of the men he opens the chequebook for. The German will reportedly cost £47.8m, the Metro report.
The Metro suggest that the 26-year-old was in talks with the Reds about a potential deal, and while a move to England still remains on the cards, it appears that north London may be his destination. However, Real Madrid are also keen (via Metro).
Considering the business the Gunners have done during this window, it seems somewhat unlikely – given Wenger’s apparent love for preparation – to make such an audacious bid so close to the new season. However, the acquisitions of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil in the past couple of years suggest that a deal could still happen.
And should Reus find that he has offers from both Arsenal and Brendan Rodgers’ side, he may find, that while the Merseyside outfit have made a good mixture of shrewd and exciting signings this summer, Arsene Wenger’s men can offer Champions League football in the upcoming campaign.
