Arsene Wenger is hoping to clinch his second signing of the summer, after reportedly making a £15.4m bid for Juventus defender Daniele Rugani.
According to the Metro, the 20-year-old is unsure of his future at Juventus Stadium, as Giorgio Chiellini and Leanardo Bonucci have developed a solid partnership, one that guided the Old Lady to the Coppa Italia, their fourth consecutive Scudetto, and a Champions League final.
Meanwhile, the Gunners have their own experienced pairing to call upon. However, while Laurent Koscielny has become one of the first names on Wenger’s teamsheet, there have been doubts over Per Mertesacker. The German seemed susceptible to mistakes during the last campaign, so may be replaced in the not too distant future.
While the club also have Gabriel Paulista waiting in the background, Rugani is the kind of exciting prospect that Wenger will relish attempting to get the best out of.
The Italian spent last year out on loan with Empoli, and was an ever-present as the promoted side managed to stay in the top flight. The Azzurri boasted one of the strongest defences in the bottom half of the top flight – which helped them keep their Serie A status – as only Chievo conceded fewer goals than the 52 Empoli let in.
