Despite rumours that Karim Benzema is attracting bids of £40.5m (via Metro), Arsenal have reportedly put Barcelona’s holding midfielder Sergio Busquets at the very top of their transfer wishlist, according to the Metro.
The Metro report that Arsene Wenger wants to broker a deal for the Spaniard as he tries to bolster the depth of his midfield. Despite his options in the middle of the park looking ominously strong going forward, the side look slightly vulnerable defensively, despite the emergence of Francis Coquelin.
However, the prospect of the Frenchman getting injured – and the options available in his place – has forced Wenger to tell the club’s board that he wants the 27-year-old, the Metro report.
The biggest stumbling block to any potential deal is thought to be whether Busquets wishes to leave the Nou Camp, the Metro suggest, having recently agreed a new contract that runs until 2019.
Should the Gunners be able to pull off a deal, it seems likely that Busquets would become the club’s first choice in that position, given what he has already achieved in the game.
He brings a lot more than a tough-tackling mentality synonymous with an anchoring midfielder. His ball retention, and passing ability is particularly impressive, and means that he would fit seamlessly into the Arsenal side.
