Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is said to be ready to splash £40m on Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema this summer, according to the Metro.
The France international has been tipped with a move away from the club this summer, as new boss Rafa Benitez has been reportedly keen to move Cristiano Ronaldo through the middle.
This could free him up to join The Gunners during the current transfer window, finally bringing a close to their lengthy chase of the 27-year-old (via The Express).
The Metro claims that Wenger had initially attempted to bring Benzema to the Emirates back in 2009, only to lose out on his signature to Madrid, but a new £40m offer could prompt all parties to go ahead with the move.
Wenger has proved that he generally has one big ace up his sleeve every summer. Last summer’s acquisition of Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona followed on from the arrival of Mesut Ozil just 12 months earlier.
The report in The Express believes that Real will only let him go for a fee close to the £42.5m the Gunners coughed up for Ozil two years ago.
