Arsenal’s hopes of landing Sporting Lisbon star William Carvalho have been hugely scuppered after the holding midfielder sustained an injury.
According to the Daily Express, the 23-year-old will be out for three months after suffering a stress fracture of the tibia.
The setback is likely to prevent the Portuguese youngster from being able to complete a successful medical should an offer come in, meaning that sides may decide to hold off any bids until January, by which time he will have had a chance to fully recover.
The Express report that the Gunners were keen on Carvalho, who was voted player of the tournament at the recent under-21 European Championships, as he helped his country reach the final.
He would have been able to provide some much needed support for Francis Coquelin. The Frenchman shone last year, and became an integral part of Arsene Wenger’s side, but the team have few options should he pick up an injury himself. However, it now appears that he will need to pursue other options as Carvalho seems a no-go, until January, at least.
