Arsenal may have been given a huge boost in their apparent hunt for Portuguese midfielder Joao Moutinho after Monaco reportedly told the player that he is free to leave the club this summer, the Metro reports.
The 28-year-old has been a consistent performer for the principality side since his £18m arrival from Porto back in 2013 (via The Guardian), but has since been linked with moves to Arsenal and Chelsea.
The Ligue 1 giants are currently in the process of trimming their expenditures, and Moutinho’s reported £110,000-per-week salary is next on the chopping block. Now up for sale, the Daily Express have claimed that Arsenal are the frontrunners for his signature.
However, the Metro believe the Gunners may face some serious competition to bring him on board as both former club Porto and Russian giants Zenit St Petersburg are also interested in snapping him up.
Moutinho, though, has made no secret of his desire to play in the Premier League, according to the Metro, thus prompting Arsene Wenger to make an enquiry into his situation.
An experienced midfielder both internationally and in European club competition, there is no doubt that Moutinho would add an extra touch of class to the Arsenal midfield from slightly further back.
