Arsenal are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign Lyon forward Alexandre Lacazette, according to the Metro.
The 24-year-old has been attracting the attention of many of the top clubs around Europe, including fellow Premier League sides Manchester United and Liverpool. However, the Metro suggest that it is the Gunners that will win the chase.
According to the Metro, the prospect of playing for Arsene Wenger is one of the main reasons why Lacazette is close to agreeing a £28m move to the Emirates.
The move would be a massive signal of intent from the north London side ahead of the new Premier League campaign. While Olivier Giroud enjoyed a lot of success last season, his injury in the early stages of the year is arguably one of the reasons that by the time he hit top form, the team were practically out of the title race, and were relying on Chelsea enduring a torrid run until the end of the season, if they were to stand a chance of lifting the prize.
Had Wenger had more depth to call upon, it could have been a different story. Lacazette – who scored 27 goals in just 33 Ligue 1 games – would be the kind of addition that will give the side the confidence they need to end their 11 year drought without the top flight crown.
