Chelsea are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign Galatasaray defender Alex Telles, according to the Metro.
The 22-year-old is set to become Filipe Luis’ replacement in the Blues’ squad. The Brazilian has nearly completed his return to former side Atletico Madrid (via Metro), leaving Cesar Azpilicueta as the club’s only first-team option on the left-hand side of defence.
The Metro suggest that Luis’ countryman was also wanted by Real Madrid, but it appears to be the Premier League champions that are in pole position to win the chase for the youngster, who proved to be one of the key men as the Turkish side went on to win the league crown last season.
Despite his efforts for his current side, it seems unlikely that he will find himself in Jose Mourinho’s starting line-up when the new season kicks off.
Azpilicueta provided the kind of stability that forced the boss to keep his £16m signing (via Guardian), who had just won the La Liga title, and reached the Champions League final on the bench for the majority of the season.
However, Telles appears to have the potential to be the success that Filipe Luis couldn’t be.
