Chelsea are hoping to get ahead of Premier League rivals Arsenal and complete a deal to sign Napoli defender Faouzi Ghoulam, according to the Metro.
The 24-year-old has been touted as Arsene Wenger’s number one target if Nacho Monreal ends up returning to Spain and joins Athletic Bilbao, the Metro report.
However, Jose Mourinho has now got the Algeria international on his radar (via Metro), after the Blues completed the sale of Filipe Luis, who headed back to Atletico Madrid.
The sale of Felipe Luis has meant that Cesar Azpilicueta is Mourinho’s only recognised left-back, and even he is more comfortable playing on the right flank.
Mourinho has been forced to use Kurt Zouma in the position during pre-season, but with a current shortage of players in the centre also, it seems unlikely that Mourinho will want to use the Frenchman in that role on too many occasions.
Ghoulam was one of Napoli’s best players last season, but their inability to qualify for the Champions League may see him consider his options if offers come in from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
