Everton have reportedly knocked back a £20m offer from Chelsea for young England defender John Stones, according to Sky Sports.
The 21-year-old has established himself as a key member of the Everton squad following his move from Barnsley two years ago, and is being tipped for a big future not only on Merseyside but on the international stage, too.
The Blues have been monitoring the youngster for several weeks now (via the Daily Mirror) as they look to up their homegrown quota as well as identify a long term replacement for the veteran John Terry.
Stones is already making waves in the England side, having collected four caps so far, however, the Toffees aren’t looking to cash in on him just yet, especially as they tied him down to a new five-year deal last August (via Daily Mail).
Though it seems cynical that Chelsea would target a young English player solely to fulfil a requirement enforced by the FA, he is undoubtedly talented enough to command a regular spot in the starting line up in the not too distant future.
Whether Chelsea will return with an improved offer remains to be seen.
