Everton have reportedly rejected Chelsea’s second bid for defender John Stones, but have suggested what the Blues will have to pay to secure their target.
According to the Daily Express, the Toffees turned down the Premier League champions’ offer of £26m, having already rejected a bid of £20m. And the Express suggest that Jose Mourinho’s men will need to stump up £34m if they wish to get their man.
If the Stamford Bridge side decide to make such an offer, it will be extremely difficult for Roberto Martinez to turn it down, especially as the Express suggest that the England international wants to join Chelsea, despite reported interest from both Manchester clubs.
While the Blues have only three recognised centre-backs in their ranks currently, the solid partnership between John Terry and Gary Cahill means that they do not necessarily need another marquee name in that position, especially as they already have Kurt Zouma waiting in the wings.
However, with Terry well into the twilight of his career, they could do with another player that will be ready to take the mantle in a couple of years. Based on what Stones has shown so far, he should be ready to do that job.
