Everton have responded to Chelsea’s two bids for John Stones (via Daily Star), by telling the Blues that if they want the defender, they need to stump up at least £30m and be willing to throw in one of their own men as part of the deal, according to the Daily Star.
The Premier League champions’ latest offer for the 21-year-old was £26m, however, the Star suggest that it was swiftly rejected by the Toffees.
However, the Star report that Roberto Martinez is resigned to possibly losing the England international, and wants to ensure that the Merseyside outfit get the best deal possible if they are to lose one of their key men.
Should the Goodison Park club lose Stones, it seems likely that Martinez will want to sign a replacement centre-back, as the former Barnsley man’s departure would leave him with just Phil Jagielka as the only senior option left.
However, Chelsea are almost equally as thin in that position currently. Other than John Terry and Gary Cahill, Jose Mourinho has just Kurt Zouma to call upon.
Perhaps however, with the money that the Blues will have to spend on Stones if they wish to sign him, he will move ahead of the Frenchman in the pecking order – despite the bright start to his Premier League career – and thus, the 20-year-old may be the one made available, even if it’s just on loan.
