Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has reportedly admitted that he would be interested in making a move to Arsenal this summer, should he find his first-team chances limited at the Bernabeu, according to El Confidencial, as reported in the Metro.
The 27-year-old is one of the Gunners’ top targets during this window, the Metro report, and Arsene Wenger has already made a phone call to the forward to discuss a move.
He could find that his interest in a Premier League switch may increase should new manager Rafael Benitez pursue plans to use Cristiano Ronaldo in the central striker role (via Metro). El Confidencial report that the situation could be even worse for the Frenchman, as Sergio Aguero remains on Los Blancos’ summer wishlist.
Should the Argentinian move back to La Liga, after four years in England, it would prove to be a double boost for Wenger’s men, as not only would they find it potentially easier to secure a deal for Benzema, but it will also mean that City’s strikeforce is severely weaker, possibly strengthening their own title ambitions.
However, if they do manage to pull off a deal for the former Lyon man, they will feel confident that they will not be relying on the failures of the sides that finished around them last season. Benzema managed 15 goals in 29 top flight games last season. If he can replicate a similar strike rate at the Emirates, the wait for the title could be coming to an end.
