Liverpool are preparing to switch their attention to Manchester City’s Stevan Jovetic, as they look for possible alternatives to Christian Benteke.
According to the Daily Star, Brendan Rodgers has been put off pursuing the Belgian forward after Aston Villa’s continued insistence that they will not accept any offers for the 24-year-old, meaning that any interested parties will have to trigger the £32.5m release clause in his contract.
The Star suggest that the Reds are preparing a £16m bid which, if accepted, would see the Montenegrin move to Anfield for less than half the price of Benteke.
The 25-year-old has struggled at the Etihad since his £22m move in 2013 (via Daily Star), and has only scored eight times in 30 Premier League appearances. However, 19 of those games have come from the bench. The opportunity of first-team football may be enough to tempt him away from Eastlands.
He would arguably have a better opportunity for more game-time on Merseyside. Following Luis Suarez’s departure last summer, and Daniel Sturridge’s prolonged injury struggles, Liverpool managed to score 52 times during the last campaign, which is the same figure that the previously mentioned pair managed on their own the year before.
While they have signed Danny Ings, they have yet to sign the kind of goalscorer that will be able to elevate them back into the hunt for a place in the top four. Whether Jovetic could be that player remains to be seen.
