There aren’t many names who have a better idea of what it takes to become a Liverpool hero than Robbie Fowler. So when he tells the club’s hierarchy to go after a player, it may be an idea for them to listen.
The Reds have already brought in six new players this summer, but the former striker believes that a goalscorer still needs to be on the shopping list following their struggles last season, the Metro report.
“We didn’t have anyone who scored 10 Premier League goals last year and I can’t remember the last time that happened at Liverpool,” he said.
And he believes that the man that can lead the line for Brendan Rodgers’ next season is Aston Villa forward Christian Benteke, who is already attracting Merseyside interest, the Metro add.
“It’s important we get a proven goalscorer and of the names being bandied about I’d go for Benteke. I think he’s excellent,” he added.
The Belgian has been impressive for the Villains since his move in 2012. He has scored 42 times in 89 Premier League games, which is the kind of strike rate which may persuade Liverpool to trigger his £32.5m release clause (via Metro).
However, his injury record has got some fans concerned that he may prove as unreliable as Daniel Sturridge did last season, when he spent prolonged periods out of the side, especially when such a large fee could be involved.
But, Fowler has dismissed any suggestion that the club should be put off by the price.
“A big thing is made out of the price but that doesn’t concern me. If a player is good enough, he’s good enough and I believe Benteke is,” he insisted.
