Liverpool have reportedly made an official offer for Real Madrid centre-midfielder Asier Illarramendi, according to the Metro.
The Metro suggest, however, that Rafael Benitez wants to keep hold of the 25-year-old, having used the Spaniard during pre-season.
But, that has not deterred the Premier League side, who believe that Illarramendi will struggle to cement a place in the side once the new La Liga season begins (via Metro).
His chances of regularly playing in competitive games under Benitez seem relatively slim given that he is competing with several marquee names for a starting spot, including former Bayern Munich man Toni Kroos and Luka Modric.
As well as a left-back, a holding midfielder is probably the final addition that Brendan Rodgers needs to make this summer. The Reds have added plenty of attacking-minded options in midfield, but still lack depth when it comes to the kind of player that will sit in front of the defence, and provide them with support.
Should Illarramendi find himself back on the periphery on the side, he could prove to be the final piece in the Liverpool puzzle, after a hectic summer on Merseyside.
