Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has reportedly told goalkeeper David de Gea to get his gloves ready to face Barcelona this weekend as he wants him ready to start the new Premier League season.
The Daily Express report that de Gea was sent for a scan at a San Jose hospital this week, having missed the first two games of the club’s pre-season tour of the United States with a back injury. However, when the results came back, it showed that there was nothing wrong with him.
Inevitably, the Spanish international’s desire to play came into question, following United’s refusal to allow him to join La Liga giants Real Madrid unless Sergio Ramos arrived in the opposite direction.
But now, with just two week to go until their season opener against Tottenham, van Gaal wants the custodian to put all thoughts of a move out of his mind by lining up against Barcelona in Santa Clara this weekend before facing Paris Saint Germain on Wednesday.
And though the 24-year-old did not feature against the San Jose Earthquakes last week, van Gaal ordered him to take part in the warm up anyway, believing that he would not be at risk of aggravating an injury if he did so.
“I have good hope he can play against Barcelona,” said Van Gaal. “He was injured and couldn’t play against San Jose so I said, ‘go stand in the goal so we have a point of direction for my attackers, but don’t do anything to risk your injury’.
“That is because we have to build him up [for the new season]. I think he can play [against Barcelona] and I hope he can.”
