With four signings already in the bag, Louis van Gaal is now ready to turn his attention to giving Wayne Rooney more support up front, following the losses of Robin van Persie (via Daily Mirror), and Radamel Falcao, who has joined Chelsea (via Independent).
According to the Telegraph, Edinson Cavani is high on the list – and a swap deal with Angel Di Maria could be on the cards – however, it is Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski that is his top target this summer.
It has been suggested that the Pole has struggled since his move to the Allianz Arena from their Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund. However, he found the back of the net 17 times in 31 top flight games last season. That kind of strike rate would definitely appeal to van Gaal, who had to watch his top goalscorer bag just 12 strikes in the Premier League last year.
The Telegraph suggest, however, that a deal may be difficult to put together. United have already secured Bayern stalwart Bastian Schweinsteiger, so it unlikely that Pep Guardiola will be willing to lose another first-team regular in the same summer.
Should United wish to secure this massive deal, they will have to make an offer that Bayern cannot contemplate refusing.
