Manchester United have handed defender Marcos Rojo a £140,000 fine for failing to renew his passport and thus missing out on the squad’s pre-season tour of the United States, the Daily Mail reports.
The Argentine international was all set to join his teammates on the other side of the Atlantic on Saturday night, but was denied access to the flight due to passport issues.
Rojo had been granted extra time off following his exertions in the Copa America, but his failure to link up with the rest of the team in San Jose angered manager Louis van Gaal, who has in turn fined him two weeks wages.
However, the Dutchman’s mood may not have been helped by the news that Angel di Maria could be closing in on a move to Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint Germain (via BBC).
United overcame Barcelona 3-1 on Saturday night, and van Gaal explained why his two Argentine internationals were not on the plane to America to join up with their teammates.
“I have heard he (Di Maria) was not on the plane,” said Van Gaal. “I cannot say anything. Marcos Rojo was not on the plane, he had a passport issue but with Di Maria I don’t know why.”
