Manchester United reportedly feel betrayed following the news that Sergio Ramos is set to enter talks with Real Madrid about a new contract, according to the Daily Star.
The 29-year-old had apparently told Madrid that he wanted to leave for the Old Trafford outfit (via Daily Mail), and thus the Star report that he became one of Louis van Gaal’s main targets for the summer.
However, it now appears that the Spaniard is set to remain at the Bernabeu, and the Star claim an insider at the Premier League side believes that the Red Devils were being used the whole time to ensure that he was offered a lucrative new deal with the La Liga club.
“He was urged to make his feelings public to help speed up the transfer, but it now looks like he was playing a game all along,” he said.
While the fact that Ramos is staying may have had no financial impact upon United, their pursuit of the centre-back could have seen them ignore other targets on the basis that they believed that Ramos wanted a switch to the north-west.
With the new season looming, and the closure of the transfer window on the horizon, United may now be forced to pay well over the odds for those other targets as window’s merry-go-round prepares to head into full swing.
There could be even worse news for United on its way, as the Mail suggest that with the Ramos deal tied up, Madrid’s president Florentino Perez plans to turn his attention to bringing David de Gea to the club.
