Manchester United’s hopes of landing Valencia’s Nicolas Otamendi have received a major boost, after Chelsea reportedly pulled out of the race to sign the defender.
According to the Metro, the 27-year-old has been a long-time target for the Old Trafford outfit, leading to speculation that Louis van Gaal would finally make a deal happen during this summer. However, the Blues planned to scupper the move.
The Metro report that Jose Mourinho hoped to offer the Argentinian an incredibly lucrative contract to lure him to Stamford Bridge. However, they have now decided against that idea.
But, it may not be as simple as that for the Red Devils. The Daily Express previously reported that the player’s agent had been speaking to both themselves and their local rivals, Manchester City.
And judging by both clubs’ spending this summer – with United forking out nearly £80m already (via Daily Express), while City have spent £49m on Raheem Sterling (via ESPN) – neither will have too many complaints to paying Otamendi’s £35m release clause.
