Manchester United have suffered a major setback in their hopes of landing Sergio Ramos, after Rafael Benitez confirmed that he planned to keep the defender at Real Madrid this summer.
According to the Daily Star, the former Chelsea and Liverpool boss revealed that he believes that the 29-year-old does not want to leave the Bernabeu, despite the Star suggesting that he had already agreed personal terms with the Red Devils.
“Ramos has known since day one that I want him to stay and, as I said the other day, I’m convinced that he will stay,” he explained.
The Star report that Louis van Gaal had put the Spaniard near the very top of his transfeer wishlist as he looks to bolster his defensive options ahead of the new campaign.
Last term, injuries and inexperience across the back four seemed to take the Dutchman’s men out of the Premier League title picture before the season had really kicked into life.
While they seemed to develop as the campaign went on, they were often guilty of mistakes that prevented them sealing a place in top four until the final weeks of the season.
In Ramos, they would have secured the kind of strong personality that could have been able to lead the back line, while also helping to get the very best out of his teammates.
However, it now appears that van Gaal will have to look elsewhere.
