Manchester United are working tirelessly to ensure that two of their main transfer targets of the summer have joined the club before they depart for their pre-season tour of America.
According to the Metro, Louis van Gaal is desperate to make sure both Morgan Schneiderlin of Southampton and Torino’s Matteo Darmian are on the plane to the states, which the Metro report leaves next Friday. However, the Guardian suggest that the timeline may be even more frantic than that, with the reported departure being Monday.
And he may be willing to spend £37.7m to get the deals across the line, with the Frenchman reportedly costing £25m (via the Metro).
The Guardian suggest that the four-match tour will represent the only opportunity for the new recruits to play alongside their teammates before the clash with Tottenham on the opening day of the new Premier League season.
While many will be aware of the qualities that Schneiderlin will bring, having developed into one of the best holding midfielders in the top flight, Darmian is a little more of an unknown quantity, having only made his international debut last year.
The Italian is the chosen solution to the full-back issues that prevented United from having a settled back line last season. He can play on either flank, but will be more comfortable on the right, which will allow van Gaal the luxury of not having to use a midfielder in the position, having called upon both Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young in the past.
