Manchester United’s hopes of landing Sergio Ramos have been dealt a major blow, after the Metro reported that Real Madrid planned to offer the defender a new contract.
The Daily Mail reported last month that the 29-year-old wanted to leave the Bernabeu this summer following Los Blancos’ inability to offer the kind of contract he felt he deserved.
The stalemate led to interest from Manchester United, as Louis van Gaal tried to bolster his defensive options ahead of the new Premier League campaign, but it now appears that Ramos may get what he wanted after all.
While van Gaal is likely to be pleased that this transfer saga is coming to a conclusion, he will surely be less than happy about the outcome.
There had been talk that a swap deal may be on the cards with Ramos heading to Old Trafford, while United goalkeeper David de Gea heading back to La Liga (via Daily Star).
While the contract offer will mean that Ramos is set to remain in Spain, and thus the swap deal is no longer on the table, it does not mean that his countryman will be staying in the Premier League.
The Daily Star report that the 24-year-old’s contract expires at the end of next season, and a switch to Madrid seems highly likely, leaving United potentially empty-handed should Ramos sign this new deal.
