Tottenham Hotspur seem to have beaten Southampton and Chelsea to the signature of Toby Alderweireld after agreeing a fee with Atletico Madrid for the defender.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy was in Spain yesterday to conclude negotiations over the 24-year-old, who spent last season in the Premier League on loan at St Mary’s Stadium.
The Saints had hoped to secure Alderweireld’s services on a permanent basis, while the Belgian had also been linked with Chelsea, who were reportedly hoping to swap him for Filipe Luis.
But The Metro claims that Tottenham have had an £11.4m bid accepted for the versatile defender, and that he will complete a move to White Hart Lane after undergoing a medical.
Atletico had an agreement in place with Southampton to sell Alderweireld to them for £6.8m this summer, but bought out that clause to open up a bidding war and get the best possible price.
Missing out on Alderweireld will come as another major blow for Southampton, who have recently been forced to sell Nathaniel Clyne to Liverpool and face losing star midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin.
