Liverpool are said to be preparing to pounce on a deal to bring back former club hero Xabi Alonso as he holding off on committing his future to Bayern Munich, according to the Metro.
The veteran pass master has only been with the Bundesliga giants for 12 months, joining from Real Madrid, but he has shown no signs of slowing down as the years tick by, but now that he is entering the final year of his contract he has confirmed that he is putting talks over a new deal on the back burner.
“My contract? We will see what happens,” he said.
“This is not the time to discuss this subject.”
According to the Daily Express, Liverpool are said to be keeping an eye on his situation as Brendan Rodgers would be interested in bringing him on board to aid his young squad.
The 33-year-old enjoyed a trophy laden five-year spell at Anfield between 2004-09. During his 210 appearances and 19 goals, he struck up a deep understanding with Steven Gerrard to form one of the most fluid midfield partnerships in Premier League history.
Alonso played a huge part in helping The Reds to lift an FA Cup, Champions League title and the European Super Cup, and his potential arrival would surely soften the blow of going through their first season without Gerrard.
