Arsenal have reportedly moved ahead of Liverpool in the race to sign Real Madrid winger Denis Cheryshev, according to the Metro.
The Metro suggest that the Gunners were considering the possibility of making a £14.9m bid for the 24-year-old, which could well see them beat Brendan Rodgers’ men to the signature of the Russia international.
Real Madrid are unlikely to stand in Cheryshev’s way if an acceptable bid is made, the Metro report, despite the former Villarreal loanee playing a fairly prominent role in Rafael Benitez’s pre-season preparations.
Cheryshev enjoyed a decent year at El Madrigal, scoring four times and bagging nine assists. Nevertheless, it would be slightly surprising if Arsene Wenger decided that he was the kind of player he was looking for.
The midfielder would be competing for a place in the side where the Gunners boast the most depth. And while he has shown signs of promise during his career, there are quite a few names already at the Emirates that should start ahead of him in the pecking order.
Finding another goalscorer and perhaps another central defender is more likely to help Wenger’s men strengthen their chances of clinching the title, rather than another attacking player in the middle of the park.
