Despite reportedly being told to leave by Lyon boss Hubert Fournier (via Metro), Alexandre Lacazette is set to ignore interest from the Premier League this summer, and instead sign a new deal with the Ligue 1 side, according to the Daily Express.
The 24-year-old has been attracting plenty of interest from England, with Arsenal and Manchester United leading the charge for his signature (via Express), while Liverpool were also supposedly in the running (via Metro). However, he now looks set to disappoint all three sides.
While the Reds have added Christian Benteke and Danny Ings already, both the Gunners and Louis van Gaal’s side perhaps need more depth up front. And it is no surprise that the Frenchman was near the very top of their transfer target list.
He scored 27 goals in 33 top flight games during the last campaign, and suggested that he had the physicality to deal with the toughness of the Premier League.
However, there would inevitably have been questions about whether he would be able to thrive in a much more competitive division like the Premier League. While it was only a pre-season tournament, he failed to make any kind of impact against Arsene Wenger’s men when the two sides met in the Emirates Cup.
Many players have enjoyed one sensational season but have then failed to back it up the year after, and perhaps there were concerns about whether Lacazette simply enjoyed a stunning campaign, or whether he is actually the real deal, hence why it seems that none of the interested trio broke the bank to make a move happen.
