Arsenal have found themselves back in the race to sign Roma defender Alessio Romagnoli, according to the Daily Express.
The Express report that the 20-year-old had been expected to complete a move to AC Milan this summer, but the deal appears to have hit a stumbling block, supposedly giving Arsene Wenger the chance to swoop in.
The Gunners have been linked with a move for the Italy under-21 international, but have so far been put off making a bid by Roma’s staggering £25m asking price, the Express suggest. However, now they may have been given a second opportunity, Wenger may reconsider his stance.
The Express claim that the north London side want to sign a defender during this window, and with Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker set to continue their established partnership heading into the new season – if their appearances in the Community Shield are anything to go by – Wenger may be looking for potential, rather than a player expecting to start instantly.
While Romagnoli enjoyed a solid campaign last year while on loan with Sampdoria, he is not quite the finished article. However, he would have a fantastic chance to deliver on his potential should he end up working with a World Cup winner in Mertesacker and one of the Premier League’s most consistent defenders in Koscielny.
