Arsenal’s hopes of landing Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema appear to have been dashed, according to the Daily Mirror.
The Mirror report that the Frenchman has been back training with Los Blancos after missing the club’s season opener against Sporting Gijon. And sources close to the player have quashed suggestions that the 27-year-old is close to sealing a move to the Emirates (via Mirror).
It is likely that, even if Rafa Benitez was previously tempted to sell Benzema, the goalless draw with the newly-promoted side – who came within inches of claiming a famous win when Antonio Sanabria’s header came down off the bar and looked as if it had come up agonisingly short of completely crossing the line – highlighted the former Lyon man’s worth to the La Liga giants.
Cristiano Ronaldo squandered Madrid’s best chance midway through the second-half when his close-range header went past the post. Had the Arsenal target have been playing and found himself in that position, it is unlikely that that chance would have gone begging and Benitez’s reign would have only started with a disappointing point.
