Arsenal have been dealt a major blow in their pursuit of Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, after Rafa Benitez discussed his expectations for the forward this season, the Daily Express report.
The Gunners have been heavily linked with a possible move for the 27-year-old, with many fans suggesting that the Frenchman would be the final piece in the puzzle that would allow Arsene Wenger’s side to end their wait for the Premier League title.
However, Benitez has seemingly quashed speculation by suggesting what he expects of the former Lyon man during this campaign, the Express reveal.
“Benzema is a great player and one of my ideas this year is that he will surpass 20-25 goals,” he said.
Unless Los Blancos’ hierarchy are keeping the former Liverpool boss out of the loop, the fact that Benitez is speaking about what he hopes for Benzema this year, as well as the fact that Madrid have not signed a replacement would suggest that Arsenal supporters are set to be very disappointed.
Fans of the Gunners will now be urging Wenger that if a deal for Benzema is dead, to make sure that the final weeks of the window are not wasted, and a new goalscorer is still brought to the Emirates.
