Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has said that he will not offer defender Nacho Monreal a new contract just yet, the Daily Express reports.
The Spaniard ended last season as the club’s first choice left-back, and has continued that into the new campaign despite the club losing their opening day clash to West Ham.
He had been linked with a return to his native Spain earlier in the summer, with Athletic Bilbao reportedly lining up a £6m offer for his services. However, that transfer talk was quickly shelved when it was reported that he would be signing a new deal to stay at The Emirates.
Having arrived from Malaga in 2013, Monreal is now set to enter the final two years of his deal with the club should it not be renewed.
But Wenger has suggested that he is not looking to open negotiations anytime soon.
“I’m happy with his performances but at the moment we are not in negotiations for a new contract,” Wenger said.
