Community Shield winners Arsenal could be set for a major boost in their hopes of landing Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, after the Daily Express reported that Los Blancos had lined up a replacement for the Frenchman.
According to the Express, Manchester City forward Sergio Aguero is the man that the Spanish giants want to lead their forward line next season.
Having often played with a lone striker, signing the Argentinian would suggest that Rafa Benitez is willing to let Benzema move on while his value is at its highest, rather than risk it plummeting if he is consigned to the bench.
And Arsene Wenger appears to be the most likely man to offer the former Lyon man a way out of the Bernabeu this summer, with the Express reporting that the Gunners would be willing to pay as much as £46m which should be enough to make a deal happen.
While Wenger will be delighted if Madrid’s move for Aguero allows Benzema to leave, the potential deals would also see one of their main rivals in the Premier League lose their main threat. The 27-year-old was able to drag his side through difficult patches last season, and finished the campaign with the Golden Boot. If Manuel Pellegrini’s side lost him, they would be seen as a much less threatening side.
