Arsenal are hoping to boost their preparations ahead of the new Premier League season, by completing a deal for France international Yoann Gourcuff, according to the Metro.
The 29-year-old is currently a free agent, having left Lyon at the end of last season, and the Metro report that he was already receiving attention from the Premier League, with Brendan Rodgers reportedly keen to bring him to Liverpool.
However, Arsene Wenger is an admirer of the attacking midfielder, and is hoping to get a deal done before the new top flight campaign kicks off next weekend (via Metro).
His wage demands may perhaps scupper any potential deal however, as the Metro suggest that he wants £80,000 a week from his new club.
Although he is available on a free transfer, the lucrative contract he is looking for brings an element of risk into any potential move.
While Lyon enjoyed a promising year in Ligue 1 – as they battled with heavyweights Paris Saint-Germain for most of the season – Gourcuff’s role in the side was minimal. He made 17 appearances for the club in the league, but nine of those games saw the former AC Milan man start on the bench. However, he was productive in the games he did play, scoring three and bagging four assists.
His injury record is also a cause for concern. Should he endure the same kind of time on the sidelines as he did with the French outfit, he may still be discarded as a flop, despite the lack of a fee required to bring him to the club.
