The Daily Express report that the 21-year-old is being pursued by Premier League champions Chelsea, and while the Blues have had three bids rejected for the England international – the latest of which was worth a reported £30m – the request for a move may strengthen their desire to land their man, and may convince the Toffees that they have little choice but to sell.
The Express claimed that Stones was being earmarked by Jose Mourinho as John Terry’s long-term successor, but judging by their respective performances this season, the changing of the guard may happen a lot sooner than expected.
Despite the speculation surrounding his future, Stones has put in a string of excellent performances for Roberto Martinez’s side, while Terry has failed to finish the last two games, having been subbed during the defeat to Man City and then being sent off against West Brom at the weekend.
