The champions will be looking for more of the same this time around, but like Arsenal, have kept their transfer activity to a bit of a minimum, signing players to replace those that have departed rather than to increase competition for places in the first team. It won’t be easy, but the club’s already iron-cast core will make them contenders once again.
Mourinho has only sought to replace the departed veterans Didier Drogba and Petr Cech with younger models this summer, splashing some cash on Radamel Falcao and Asmir Begovic. Falcao notoriously struggled for form last year with Man United, but Mourinho has vowed to get him back to his best this time around. The Blues have brought in more youngsters, but have only lent them out to their European feeder clubs.
Eden Hazard. Having drawn comparisons to the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi recently, the Belgian live wire will be expected to deliver on the hype once again whilst going the extra mile to step up his game.
Mourinho has already hinted that Loftus-Cheek and Dom Solankie will play an increased role in the squad next term. The midfielder impressed towards the tail end of the previous campaign, but had to be reprimanded for his attitude during the pre-season campaign. This could be a huge year for the 19-year-old, as long as he listens to his manager.
It won’t be long before the Special One partakes in his own brand of mind games, though this year he may be tempted to keep quiet with his criticism of the match day officials.
