Jose Mourinho’s desire to freshen up Chelsea’s back four has seen him give the go-ahead for a £40m bid for Everton defender John Stones (via Daily Star) and make an enquiry regarding Real Madrid star Raphael Varane (via Metro).
While the bid is set to be made for the Toffees’ youngster, the Star claim that they may have a considerable task on their hands if they wish to land the 21-year-old. The former Barnsley man will not be handing in a transfer request at Goodison Park (via Star), which will surely take a lot of the pressure of having to sell off of Everton.
It is perhaps the uphill battle that awaits them if they want to bring Stones to Stamford Bridge that has tempted them towards making an effort to sign Varane.
The 22-year-old worked with Mourinho during his time at the Bernabeu, and his quality and potential is obvious. However, he has the difficult task of shifting either Sergio Ramos or Pepe if he wants a place in Rafa Benitez’s side. While he may have thought that he may have a similar fight on his hands if he joined the Blues, recent events would suggest that he may stand a much better chance of first-team football in the Premier League.
Mourinho gave the first hint that he was looking towards a post-John Terry era at the Bridge when he replaced him at half-time with the side struggling at Manchester City. In previous years, the skipper would have been the one that would have galvanised the team.
But Mourinho now appears to be looking towards the men that will replace the 34-year-old when he decides to call it a day.
